The web / La toile

Like everybody else, I work for a living to pay the bills and to buy myself a little bit of good time. The end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st have changed our way of working considerably. We are all connected on the web and we talk regularly with the entire planet. Having worked in companies with offices in many countries, I have had the opportunity to appreciate the benefits of the internet and e-mails for example.

But where IT technology has surely made even more waves, is in our everyday life, outside work. Now, we are also in contact with the entire planet from our lounge or even our garden! Business opportunities which did not exist before the development of the internet have now been discovered. Companies have appeared and have become giants in record times, never seen before. It is the case for companies like Google, Amazon or Ebay. When it took sometimes more than half a century for some industry giants like General Motors to become companies valued in billions, these new companies have managed to attain the same values in just a few years! Today Google’s value is more than the ones of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler put together, the 3 biggest car manufacturers of American cars!

Amazon and Ebay are not at this level, but these companies are among the top 100 brands in the world while they did not exist 20 years ago.

With the birth of these companies, a door has opened to get us to benefit form their ideas. A still growing number has jumped on the opportunity to sell on line. Mrs X started selling her “old” clothe; Mr Y started selling DVDs… An entire world which did not exist has suddenly appeared. And the ones who dreamed of starting a little business finally had the opportunity to do so without a major financial backup. Little by little individuals have managed to sell sufficiently to drop their daily job and start a little business and live from it fairly well to very well. The idea has grown as more and more people are trying to live the dream: Have their own little business, work for themselves; work whenever they want, not to be stuck on the road at rush hour trying to get to work…

But is the dream so simple to realise?

Let us start again / Recommencement

An Expatriate, I am French and I have been living in England for over 15 years.

I started this Blog a couple of years ago and a few months later I abandoned it. What was there did not interest me anymore, so I decided to start afresh. A clean plate to talk about anything and everything…

Now bi-lingual, I decided to talk in both French & English.
